Study human personality, psyche, and human sexuality in the context of Jewish thought.

Using the text of M'silat Yesharim (The Path of the Just), by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto from the early 18th century, the class will consider how we order our lives as moral human beings.
Our third session, different from the first two, will look at some passages from Talmud that discuss human sexuality and the power dynamics that impact our most intimate relationships. We will consider a variety of issues associated with desire, self-control, and respect for those closest to us. Our tradition teaches that sex is not wicked or evil as is taught in other faith traditions. What is Conservative Judaism’s opinion on sexual expression?
If Judaism acknowledges that human beings are driven by a variety of desires and urges, including human sexual desire, how do ancient Jewish scholars suggest teens behave? How might these guidelines put an emphasis on respecting our partners and ourselves? Ultimately, why did the rabbis wind up teaching about sexuality anyway?
