Sisterhood

Agudas Achim Sisterhood is dedicated to bringing the women of our community together socially and spiritually as a community within a community. Throughout the year, we offer many ways to unwind after long days – at a local pub or for a game night – or to spend time together at a morning Tea or evening Soiree. We also get together for guest speakers and Sunday hikes. Membership is open to any woman associated with Agudas Achim – no matter your age or whether you are Jewish or the relative of a Jewish member.

Our Sisterhood is growing and changing. If you haven’t come out to an event in a while, come to our next event to check us out! We can’t wait to see you!      Award winning author and journalist Claudia Kalb will take us on a fascinating journey into the lives and minds of twelve famous figures, from Charles Darwin, Howard Hughes and Albert Einstein to Marilyn Monroe, Frank Lloyd Wright and Princess Diana.
     New York Times Bestseller Andy Warhol Was a Hoarder was named "Book of the Week" by People magazine and has been featured on NPR's Weekend Edition and CBS This Morning and in a wide range of publications, including The New York Times Sunday Book Review, Forbes, Psychology Today, Parade, and The New York Post. Claudia will be signing and selling her book after the program.

  • BRAWS: ** Sunday, April 22. Bring your donations to the Sisterhood brunch!!! **Sisterhood is collecting tampons, pads, panti-liners as well as new bras and underpants (please leave tags on) for BRAWS. The Mission of BRAWS (Bringing Resources to Aid Women's Shelters) is to bring dignity and empowerment to women and girls living in shelters by providing new, personally fitted undergarments and menstrual supplies. We will direct you to our collection box that morning. Please bring all your items to the Sisterhood brunch on Sunday April 22, start time 9:30am.      Sisterhood returns to Hillwood! We invite you join us for an afternoon tour of the lavish expansive gardens followed by a lovely artful tea (intricate tea sandwiches, exquisite delights) outside under cover. Optional mansion visit at no additional cost following the tea. Last mansion guided tour of the day 3:30 pm but you may also do a self guided tour until the museum and gardens close at 5:00pm. 
     RSVP by Friday, April 20 to Gloria Canter. This is a firm deadline. March retrospective

Purim carnival!
     Thanks so much to everyone who helped us put on another successful Purim carnival!  Well over a hundred children - members and non-members - came to have fun  - playing games, winning prizes, eating falafel, and joined in the festive atmosphere.  As usual, we owe that success to the many volunteers who helped make it a success.  Particular thanks to Hannah Kraushaar (Volunteer Coordinator), Haley Crittendon-Gordon (Game coordinator) and Karen Maline (kitchen) -- and to all of our spouses and children!  Special thanks also for ticket table set up and money management -- Arlene LechnerSandy CohenBarbara Lavine and Gayle Weiss, to Lynn Rosenblum for taking the lead on putting stickers into 20 dozen plastic eggs, and to Rachel  Goldberg and the Quigley children for helping out so much with set up, clean up and running games.  Thank you to our fearless leaders in the kitchen -- Louis MarcusGary Zuckerman, and Al Foreman, as well as to art/makeup table coordinators -- Barbara Elkin and Mindi Maline, Prize Table overseers -- including Allena Kopper and Uri Arkin, as well as to all the countless other members.  Many thanks also to all the teens and rising teens who ran games, volunteered, carried things, set up, and were generally great helpers.  Thank you everyone!

Purim gift bags were delivered to 76 Jewish residents in 9 Northern VA facilities."

Cheesecake and ChatSunday May 20  4:00-6:00 pm
     Please join Sisterhood for a Shavuot afternoon gathering. Todah Rabah to Jodi Rein for opening her home to us. We will munch on cheesecake and other dairy delights. We'll also provide a spread of pareve selections, including veggies and seasonal fruits. Then grab a cold drink and sit outside with us as we explore the holiday of Shavuot, the Jewish Festival that celebrates the giving of the Torah to the Israelites at Mount Sinai.

Autumn Announcement 

     With snow still lurking last month, it's hard to think about fall leaves. But MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW.  Thursday night, September 27, 7:00 pm. Sisterhood is once again teaming with Men's Club to bring you...SUPPER-IN-THE-SUKKAH! Due to popular demand, we are reprising this event for the second year in a row. Watch this space and our newsletters for registration information. Seating is limited because the event is held in the Sukkah. You don't want to miss out. Come celebrate the glorious earthy holiday of Sukkot under a canopy of stars as we bring you a sumptuous buffet of mouth watering dishes.

Information and Help Needed

Child Care: If you would like to participate in a Sisterhood event but are unable to do so because you do not have child care, let us know at least 5 days in advance of the event and we will work to accommodate you.

Sisterhood Membership ($36) & T-Shirts ($10): Contact Mackenzie Silverman (315-868-9232 or mckenz613@aol.com) for information on becoming a member or to get your shirt to show your Sisterhood pride! Dues checks can be made payable to Agudas Achim Sisterhood and mailed to the AAC office.

Carpenter’s Shelter: Sisterhood collects travel-size toiletries and unopened cosmetics for the Carpenter’s Shelter throughout the year. You may drop them off in a box on the left side in the Coat Room. Thank you!

Judaica Shop: The Sisterhood Judaica Shop provides you an opportunity to shop while supporting your Congregation. Open during Sunday Religious School hours. For appointments or questions please contact: Michelle (202 288 9856) or Susan (703 489-5068).
