ALIVE! Update

Step alive! Walkathon
Sunday, October 17
Join ALIVE!’s 40th annual StepALIVE! Walkathon to fight hunger and poverty in Alexandria. The pandemic has intensified the need for support.
This year’s event is onsite, offsite or virtual—walker’s choice: Everyone in the AAC community can support the Walkathon, and everyone registered gets a T-shirt.
Where can we walk?
Onsite: Beginning and ending in the First Christian Church parking lot, 2723 King St. Live music before and after. Pre-packaged snacks after. Kickoff at 2 p.m. Walk the whole route down into Old Town and back or walk a section of your choice.
Offsite: Walk in the AAC parking lot, around your neighborhood, in a park, or anywhere else you’d like, at the time of your choosing.
Virtually: Congregate with a group on your porch or on your couch; flaunt your T-shirts and call yourselves walkers. Meet on Zoom and walk on your treadmills.
Who can walk?
Everyone because anyone who registers counts as a walker. Walk with an AAC, neighborhood, family, or friends group or go solo. It’s all good.
How do we register? Click to join Team Agudas Achim. Everyone who registers gets a StepALIVE! T-shirt.
How else can we support the Walkathon?
Donations are welcome. Click on the registration link and look for the donations button. If you’ve registered, you can invite friends and family members to support your walk with donations at the AAC page.
Are there winners?
Prizes will be awarded to the congregation with the most walkers and the one that raises the most money.
And, there’s more: AAC affinity groups are vying to turn out the most participants. So far, the Board of Directors, the various Chavurot, Young Families, Men’s Club, Sisterhood, Preschool, AAC Scouts, Ein Lanu Z’man, and Social Action Committee are competing for bragging rights. Other groups are expected to join. Register online at the Agudas Achim link above. By race day you’ll be contacted to pick all the AAC affinity groups you want to represent.

Traditionally, we have held our major collection of shelf-stable groceries for Alexandrians in need at Kol Nidre. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, in-building activities are restricted, but the need is still great. Instead of bringing food to the synagogue, please contribute what you would have spent for groceries; for the food you forgo fasting on Yom Kippur; or for the cost of a break fast meal for family and friends.
Give online or print out the online donation form and send it with your check to ALIVE!, 2723 King St., Alexandria VA 22302.
Please enter “AAC/Operation Isaiah” in the Additional Comments box for online donations, on the “honoree” line in the printout donation form, and on the memo line of your check so ALIVE! will know AAC has remembered its neighbors in their time of need.
If conditions change, we will collect groceries in conjunction with Sukkot. Not knowing the future, please donate now. Meanwhile, ALIVE! collects food donations Thursdays, 3-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon at 801 S. Payne St. Visit ALIVE! Food Program online for details and accepted foods.
