Matanot L'evyonim: Leket Yisrael
Leket Israel, Israel’s National Food Bank
Leket Israel, Israel’s National Food Bank, rescues 40 million pounds of healthy, surplus food annually that would have gone to waste, from hundreds of farms, hotels, corporate caterers and IDF army bases. Leket provides the rescued food to over 200 non-profits feeding 246,000 Israelis of all backgrounds each week, including Holocaust survivors, immigrants, the elderly, kids at risk, single parent families, and more.
The pandemic has dramatically increased demand for food assistance. Over 20% of Israelis are now unemployed (up from 4% in March 2020), with many families requesting food assistance for the first time. Over the past 9 months, Leket Israel has provided 1.8 million fresh meat meals and nearly 31 million pounds of nutritious produce – an 18% increase over the same period last year.
All contributions made toward the Leket Israel Matanot L'evyonim Campaign will go towards surplus fresh food that is delivered on Purim and Shushan Purim in order to fulfill the Mitzvah. For every dollar received, Leket Israel rescues and delivers seven pounds of high-quality food for hungry Israelis.
