ALIVE! Special Appeal During Coronavirus Outbreak

Message to Congregations and Community:

From Eric Winakur, ALIVE! President

and Jennifer Ayers, ALIVE! Executive Director

Many of you have been asking ALIVE! how you can help! It’s wonderful to know you are living a life of generosity and love -- an embodiment of the founding vision that makes ALIVE! the cornerstone organization it is for the City of Alexandria. Thank you.

There are a few things you can do:

  1. Let others know that we want them to be safe. Although donations of items are our regular supply for all of our programs and we count on them for our daily supply, we have decided to suspend collections for the time being. Hang onto them for our future needs. Please. We don’t want anyone to be at risk or to spread virus to anyone. Furniture, housewares and even regular canned food donations are always important to those in need, but right now sharing these things is too risky.
  2. Financial donations are needed now, as every penny is being used to purchase food at very low cost to serve the community as quickly as we can. We are working as fast as we can to get food at low cost to as many people as we can safely. This means reducing the number of hands involved and ensuring the pipeline remains stable, safe and secure. Visit to donate.
  3. The outpouring of requests to provide volunteer help shows that you care and want to help. Thank you. If you are healthy and able to volunteer please register or direct people to register as a Ready to Go volunteer at Volunteer Alexandria, register online. You will be directed to pick an activity - ALIVE! will be providing a list of ALIVE! activities to Volunteer Alexandria as they become available.
  4. Pray or meditate on ways you can help a neighbor in need now and in the future. We encourage all of our congregations to send a video of a prayer to be posted from their congregation to those we serve on our website daily; a prayer for our city and those in need. We invite everyone to view the prayer each night.
  5. Check in on each other, on your friends and neighbors and help where you can.
